Artist Statement:
Mark O’Connell is a Toronto based painter, his work is an exploration of the figure within an urban landscape and urban landscapes themselves. The inspiration for the paintings comes from photographs the artist takes in NYC and Toronto. The work examines what it means to be a resident of a large post millennial city, and the quality of life lived there.
The exploration focuses on three key areas: 1. Figure in environment: the interaction of city dwellers with each other, the vehicles around them and the city itself. Alienation and assimilation of the individual. 2. Colours of the city: unusual juxtapositions that occur spontaneously in the ever shifting landscape of a city. 3. Urban light: the quality of light within the city, shaped and obstructed by the artificial constraints of tall buildings and the reflective surfaces of glass and various metals.
Mark is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and currently teaches Design and Composition at Max the Mutt College of Animation in Toronto, Canada.
Mark has received the following awards:
4th Year Student Design Competition - 1st place. 1997.
4th Year Dean's list, 1997.
Yuki Textile Award and scholarship, 1997.
Tuition Challenge Award and ...
